When women succeed, nations are more safe, secure, and prosperous.
~ Barack Obama
When we think of empowerment, our mind goes to images of women rallying around a cause,
Leading a movement, standing up for equal rights or pay, or speaking out against injustice in the world.
But when I think about empowerment, my mind is drawn to another image.
I can remember the feeling of cold engrossing my entire body.
Oxygen flooding through my nose, the beeping of machines,
And not being able to move anything from the neck down.
No I hadn't been in a horrific accident.
It was quite the opposite.
I was lying flat on an operating room table about to hear the words,
Mom and Dad, meet your new baby boy!
As the birth of our son was about to happen.
Things were NOT supposed to go down that way.
And I had fought the system to let me birth my upside down, footling breech baby, as I wanted, until the last second that I could.
But it was out of my control.
Sometimes lying still and being OK with your thoughts, is empowerment.
Empowerment is releasing the coulda, shoulda, wouldas, and accepting what's out of your control.
Empowerment is getting out of bed when the depression and anxiety tries to paralyze you.
Empowerment is eating without guilt or emotion.
Empowerment is saying YES to yourself, and NO to the demands of others.
Empowerment is pushing play on a workout instead of snoozing.
Empowerment is posting your own testimonial pictures in hopes to inspire others.
Empowerment is having a difficult conversation with a loved one.
Empowerment is putting down the phone and playing with your kids.
Empowerment is asking for help when you need it.
Empowerment is looking in the mirror and saying,
"I will do my best today."
You are the driver of your own life.
You don't need to lead a global movement,
You just need to start by leading yourself.
You have all the power, tools, and resources between our two ears to go out and make the best choices each day.
Do you believe that?
You have all the power to leave the past in the past, be present today with the ones you love, and go blaze a path for yourself in the future.
I believe in you.
I can't EMPOWER YOU to change your habits.
But I can tell you that I'm crawling, walking, or running beside you and I promise to teach you everything I know that's changed my life along the way!
