"Vulnerability is having the courage to show up when you can't control the outcome: - Brene Brown
It was like those words jumped off the page and dove right into my heart.
"That's IT."
I shouted from my kitchen table
As my hubby was working downstairs,
"HUH? You ok?"
No, I thought.. but I will be.
That's the blessing and the curse of two entrepreneurs working from home building our brands and businesses.
We just shout at each other throughout the day.
Things that need to get done, questions, and the never ending, "What do you want to eat for lunch?"
You could say that being an entrepreneur gives you freedom.
But it also comes with a shit ton of emotions.
Constantly putting yourself out there for criticism and opinions.
And if you're doing it right, you're going to take risks and you're going to fail.
At least that's what I'm learning.
And that's when the we're faced with a true decision.
Put on some emotional armour and avoid tough conversations, procrastinate, or even worse,
Do everything we can to be "good boys and girls."
Don't make waves. This is how it has to be.
That's what I've been taught.
But that rarely serves us in business or life.
We have to set boundaries, but we also have to speak up for ourselves, even when we don't know the outcome.
2019.. things are different for me.. Here's how I'm doing it in business.
1. Price is the last thing I change (or don't change) when offering my services.
Money mindset is a deep rooted reflection of our worth.
We often think,
"I can't charge that! They will so no, it's too expensive. Who do I think I am? Will they not buy it because of price?"
It's rarely (if your copy is aligned with your brand so you're attracting the right people) the price.
It's either they don't trust you, or they don't see the value in you or your product.
And the way to overcome that is to serve the hell out of them with free education based marketing (blogs, social media, podcast, newsletter, webinars.)
You have to be willing to share your vulnerable stories and teach the outcomes with no agenda in mind. People have to get to know YOU behind the business.
That's your proof. That's who they connect with, and if you're doing it right, you can charge what you feel is right.
Adjust the price LAST after you've tweaked the messaging.
2. You can fire clients.
In a loving, positive way, that is.
I used to act out of obligation.
"Well... they ARE paying me, so I should over deliver by answering every message, email, and ask of me."
There are other ways to over deliver and I learned the hard way that if you don't set clear boundaries of your availability, people will take advantage.
Perhaps they don't do it with any ill intentions, you've just set the standard that you're available 24/7.
But then what about people who don't respect boundaries.
In the words of Ron Burgandy from Anchorman. "Then I fire you.. bing, bang, boom."
As a trainer (my first successful online business before becoming an online strategist)
I used to have a client who consistently came to our 30 minute sessions, 20 minutes late.
She'd expect me to push my next clients, or arrange my day care drop off to suit her.
She'd also never listen to my recommendations of simple nutrition and was unwilling to change her bad habits,
Only to come in telling me about the latest juice cleanse she's trying or fast fix pills she's taking.
It was pure insanity.
I let the negative energy and demands go on for about a year "because she was paying me well."
But I realized the wear and tear on my life wasn't worth it.
It's OK to let a client go who isn't a right fit.
And I get it, it's scary charging your worth and letting people go.
You may fear that you won't HAVE any clients.
But you will.
You will have opened the door, for the right ones, and when that happens, it's pure magic.
That's what I want for you.
I want 2019 to be your breakthrough year where you value yourself.
Your resilient self.
And know that I'm right there with you, taking off the emotional armour, but still getting in the ring.
I'll see you in there!
