I walked to the center of the stage and I delivered my one true sentence,
"I moved 400 glorious miles away from Mommy Dearest."
The crowd laughed (ironically I wasn't trying to be funny!),
And my mentor, Bo Eason, commented on how strong, powerful, feminine, and unapologetic I was.
I was holding my stance, smiling, and for the first time in a long time, I felt good.
I wasn't worrying about what I looked like, or what the audience thought of me.
I was focused on the woman in the crowd, with short brown hair and a red shirt, who I knew needed my message.
I happened to lock eyes on her when I delivered the sentence.
When you try to speak to everyone, you speak to no one.
When you worry about yourself on stage, everyone else starts to worry.
That's why practice makes perfect (whatever that looks like.)
I don't believe we ever truly feel like we've reached perfection.
As an entrepreneur, business strategist, speaker, author, I'm always delivering lines a different way,
Writing and speaking content, testing stories, getting the words as right as I can make them.
Do I mess up?
All the darn time, but I do it mostly in practice.
When it comes to stage time or launch time, there isn't much room for error.
And I'm ready!
I still get nervous, but it's pent up energy that wants to come out.
It's underdog energy and I let it go!
So here's what you've got to do.
1. Pick the avenue you want to master.
(Let's say speaking.)
2. Write your starting content.
(A signature story, some teaching points or how to steps, objections to overcome, a call to action).
3. Pick a platform that supports your efforts.
(If it's speaking, get on podcasts, start your own podcast, start going live on social media, post on You Tube.)
4. Practice, practice, practice!
I have to MOVE for my practice to be successful. I speak my content when I'm on a run, at the gym, washing dishes, and in the shower.
I also have dedicated practice time each week.
The underdog wins by running the miles.
The underdog wins by not giving up.
