I laugh at the memes about murder hornets and uselessly buying 2020 planners.
I cry and rage about COVID and Black Lives Matter.
And then I stop.
I, as a White, American and Canadian Entrepreneur... I'm good.
I've always been good.
The chances of me living in Canada, parenting, working growing our business along side my husband and our son, from where I came from were 0.00%
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, working class family, and got my degree as an RN. There ain't nothing Canadian or Entrepreneurial about that.
But I evolved. I learned. I unlearned. And I persisted.
And I believe the world can do the same.
I have hope for the world we're raising our son in.
I have hope for humanity.
Here's why.
1. Awareness is at an all time high because hope is at an all time low.
So many white people are afraid to speak. Scared to say the wrong thing. I think we're all learning to shut our mouths, open our ears, and be intentional if we do want to speak. That it's not about US. It's not about our white feelings. We're recognizing that racism, whether known or naive, that we have inside us, and we want to change it. We want to get educated and feel hopeful again.
2. People are universally loved and connected.
As a business owner, I know the devastation that can happen when what you build is destroyed. But not like this.
The message from many business owners who have had windows smashed and damage done.
"We can rebuild. But a life that's taken can't"
My peers, friends, business owners in the US are taking off days to go rally. Everyone is donating what they can. Police officers are kneeling and hugging and listening.
There is no ALL BAD or ALL GOOD in any profession or race, and the underpinning is an inherent love.
3. Entrepreneurs and organizations are educating and leading.
I've seen masterclasses offered and resources shared. I've seen people using their knowledge and skills to either pivot and add jet fuel to black organizations and entrepreneurs or call out fellow white entrepreneurs and friends when what they are saying and sharing isn't helpful.
Is there awful, ugly hate in this world... yes.
I felt like my naive little why can't we all sing Kumbaya bubble has burst, when I decided to really see the world.
So, I decided to shut up, step up, skill up, and then speak up.
But I also decided to see the good.
People are good. We can learn and unlearn and learn again.
We can adapt. We can change.
