How Hiding in My Basement Has Given Me Sanity

I was hiding in the basement.

I needed quiet to talk about getting rid of distractions on The Not To Secret Ingredient Business Show.

I used to work from the kitchen table, while my husband worked in the basement, and our son was at school.

I would come down in the morning, pour myself a cup of coffee, and sit down.

  • Meditate in peace.
  • Yoga in peace.
  • Journal in peace.
  • Set and intention in peace.

Now I have a virtual schooler, brand equity building husband, and myself who puts out endless amount of content trying to all work in the same space.

IT'S SO LOUD.

At first I was resentful. This was MY space and now it's invaded.

Then I tried to be super mom.

"Oh I can totally write a Facebook Posts, while printing school sheets, getting snacks, and minding my own business while my husband is on a call. "

The motto in our home is don't complain, find solutions. So I took my own medicine.

Where was a space, that looked good on camera, that I could focus?

The Basement.

This was supposed to be Oliver's school area, but the reality is that he needs us during school. He needs us to print and submit his homework. He needs us when the system randomly kicks him out. He needs us when his video won't work. He's 6.

So downstairs in our home is the,

This is serious. Get shit done. Don't bother me. Mega deal important.

It's become a safe haven for me. A sanity saver, and a bit of a break from the noise around me upstairs.

It got me thinking about business.

How many times do we enter into conversations with people where we can't truly listen?

How many days do we pack our calendars full with calls, summits, podcasts trying to soak up every nugget of wisdom from the greats that we can?

It's time to stop learning and start doing.

It's time to leave space to breathe.

I get asked a lot about how I work side by side with my husband and how I'm so involved in my son's life?

I get asked a lot how I have such high energy?

I take time for solitude.

I go for 15 minute walks around the block, alone.

I do online martial arts (in the basement).

I've started taking online piano and voice lessons.

I have activities and hobbies outside of my family and work life.

Glennon Doyle said it best,

"What if the call of motherhood is not to be a martyr but to be a model?"

When's the last time you did something for you?

When's the last time you took 5 God forsaken minutes for yourself?

My woo woo friends will back me on this one. When you take care of yourself, you emit joy, happiness, positivity, abundance and that's exactly what attracts to you.

Getting a lot of no's in sales? Take time for you.

Creatively in a rut? Take time for you.

Getting pissy at your family? Take time for you.

Maybe you can't change location, but you can communicate.

When I get up early, and my morning loving husband wants to chat, I let him know that the first hour of my day is sacred.

When I have a big sales call, I let Oliver know that he's resourceful and he can figure it out without me for one hour.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we need to be going more inward, to express ourselves outward.
