We make a plan, we stick together, we think about humanity as a whole, and keep working. Our kids have dreams and so do we. And if you don't have a dream, then there is no better time than NOW to play a bigger game.
When that promise was broken, I was shattered. With two weeks before prom, I had to ask a boy to take ME. He said yes, but I don't think he wanted to go. I think it was a pity yes. "I HATE YOU, I NEVER WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN." I yelled into the phone. Choking back sobs.
My teens I was a perfectionist. My job was to be perfect as I thought it was the only way I could get the love I desperately craved. My 20's, a people pleaser. I denied my feelings, wants, wishes, dreams because I wanted to keep the peace. The beginning of my 30's, ignoring the signs and settling. Loose boundaries and being a doormat. You have to live who you weren't to know who you are.
I left that mastermind in a search of 'Who Am I', and the more I practiced my speeches and presentations, the better they got. Because I had nothing to prove. I had nothing to convince others. Turns out in adulthood, perfection and achievement aren't the only way to get love.
Whether it's dealing with a narcissistic parent, client, spouse, care provider, co-worker, boss or peer, it's important to know how to navigate dealing with them. I'm no expert but when threats and demands were thrown my way, I knew I needed to get help. You may need to change the way you say something or the way you teach it if it's not landing, but don't throw out your whole idea just because people tell you it's crazy, or stupid, or that it makes no sense. When I was painting his fingers I saw his innocence, his joy, his love of self-expression. Who am I to squash that in fear of being bullied, or different, or not accepted? It's no different in business. As Steve Jobs said, "Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do"
